How it works (step by step)
- Match tied → super over decides it (T20Is, ODIs, tournament knockouts).
- Each team nominates 3 batters and 1 bowler for its over.
- The team batting second in the match shall bat first in the Super Over (individual tournaments may prescribe a variation).
- Two wickets ends the over early (only 3 batters available).
- Higher score wins. Still tied? Another super over — repeated until there's a winner (the old boundary-count rule is gone).
Key rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Batters | 3 nominated per team |
| Bowler | 1 nominated; any bowler eligible in the match may bowl (no restriction on having bowled the final over) |
| Wickets | Lose 2 and the over ends |
| Tiebreaker | Unlimited super overs (no boundary countback since 2019) |
| Subsequent overs | A bowler who bowled the previous super over can't bowl the next one |
The 2019 final: why the rule changed
The most famous super over ever — and the reason the rules look the way they do now.
Lord's, 14 July 2019. England and New Zealand both finished on 241. The super over: England batted first and made 15/0 (Stokes and Buttler). New Zealand needed 16 — Neesham smashed 13 off 5, then Guptill was run out diving for the 16th run. 15/1. Tied.
Under the rules at the time, England won on boundary countback (26–17). New Zealand had matched England run for run across 102 overs and lost on a stat nobody had thought about. The outcry was instant and global — and the ICC scrapped boundary countback within months. Now? Tied super over means another super over, for as many as it takes.
I watched that finish standing up in a room where nobody sat down for the last hour. When Guptill was run out, half the room celebrated and the other half just stared — nobody actually understood who'd won for a good thirty seconds. That's how broken the old rule was.
Other famous super overs
| Match | What happened |
|---|---|
| NZ vs WI, 2008 | The first-ever T20I super over — West Indies won it in Auckland, and the concept stuck |
| KXIP vs MI, IPL 2020 | The "double super over" — two tied super overs back to back before Punjab finally won; the longest shootout in IPL history |
| India vs NZ, 2020 (T20Is) | India won two super overs in the same series — Rohit's last-ball sixes in Hamilton are still replayed |
| USA vs Pakistan, 2024 T20 WC | The ultimate upset delivery — USA held their nerve and Pakistan didn't; one over that announced American cricket |
| 2019 WC final | Tied on 241, tied on 15 — decided by a boundary count that no longer exists |
The tactics: it's not just slogging
A super over is six balls of pure game theory:
- Who bats? Your two best power-hitters, obviously — but teams also value running between wickets (see: Guptill's dive). A keeper-batter who runs hard can be worth more than a pure slogger.
- Who bowls? Not always your best bowler — it's your best yorker bowler. Full, straight, hard to get under. Spinners occasionally get the nod if the pitch grips.
- Batting first vs second: chasing 16 off 6, you know exactly what's needed — but the pressure of "must score off every ball" has broken better batters than these. There's no consensus; teams split on it.
- The wide-ball trap: a wide doesn't just cost a run — it costs a ball without a scoring chance. Bowlers would rather be hit for six than bowl two wides.
Common misconceptions
- "Boundary count still decides it." No — gone since 2019. Unlimited super overs now.
- "The bowler can't have bowled the last over." Wrong — any eligible bowler can bowl the first super over. The restriction only applies to subsequent ones (can't bowl two in a row).
- "It's 6 wickets like a normal over." No — 3 nominated batters, so 2 wickets ends it.
- "Tied super over = shared trophy." Not in ICC events — they keep going until someone wins, however long it takes.
What happens if... (edge cases)
- Super over also tied: play another. And another. There's no limit.
- Rain during the super over: play resumes or restarts per playing conditions — the tiebreaker must produce a winner in knockouts.
- A batter gets injured mid-over: the third nominated batter replaces them; if both nominated partners are out or hurt, the over ends.
- Does the super over count for stats? Runs and wickets in super overs don't count toward career records — it's a tiebreaker, not part of the match proper. It also doesn't affect NRR.
Why it matters
With the tri-series and T20Is running tight games this month, a super over is always one tied finish away. Now you know exactly what's happening when it comes.
