WTC 2025–27 context
This is Pakistan's second home series of the current World Test Championship cycle (South Africa visited for two Tests in late 2025). Coming in, Sri Lanka sit 7th and Pakistan 9th (last) in the standings — both need wins to stay in the final race. A 2–0 sweep either way reshapes the table. Track it here: WTC points table 2025–27.
Tour so far
Sri Lanka's long tour began with 3 T20Is (Oct 9–13), followed by the ODI tri-series with England (Oct 18–31). By November both teams will know each other's players well — no surprises left, which usually makes for better Test cricket.
Squads
Test squads are announced closer to the series — this page updates the moment they're out. I'd give a proper run to one young batter at No. 3 — Pakistan keep shuffling that spot, and nobody owns a position they have to re-earn every series.
The WTC table as it stands
| Pos | Team | P | W | L | D | Pts | PCT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Sri Lanka | 6 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 24 | 33.33 |
| 9 | Pakistan | 9 | 2 | 7 | 0 | 5 | 4.63 |
As of early October 2026. Pakistan's heavy over-rate deductions are visible in that points column — five points from nine Tests tells its own story.
The maths is brutal for both: with the final race already taking shape above them, anything less than a series win effectively ends their campaigns. A 2–0 sweep either way reshapes the bottom half of the table. Full standings and the points system: WTC points table 2025–27 · How the WTC points system works.
What each team needs
Pakistan need wins, plural — and probably a sweep. Ninth place with a 4.63% points percentage is a rebuild on paper; in practice, it's two home Tests where nothing but victory keeps the cycle alive. The home crowd will demand it, and so will the new Test leadership — Babar Azam captains the Test side, a fresh start after years of musical chairs.
Sri Lanka sit seventh and travel better than their ranking suggests. A drawn series keeps them afloat; a win in Pakistan would be a statement result that echoes through the rest of their cycle. Their spinners will fancy Lahore in the second Test.
Venue notes
Rawalpindi (1st Test, Nov 9–13): Early-season moisture can help the seamers on day one, but Pindi Tests typically flatten into batting paradises — first-innings runs are the currency. Win the toss, bat big, and let the fourth innings do the talking.
Lahore (2nd Test, Nov 17–21): Gaddafi's renovated 34,000-seat arena for the decider. Lahore pitches traditionally take spin as the match wears on — expect the tweakers to decide it on days four and five, in front of the loudest crowd in the country.
History between these sides
Pakistan and Sri Lanka have played some underrated Test series. The 2019 home series — Pakistan's first Test series win on home soil in a decade — ended years of exile-era hurt, sealed with a big win in Karachi. Sri Lanka, for their part, have never been pushovers here; their 2019 tour showed they compete in Pakistani conditions. Expect five days of proper cricket, twice.
There's nothing quite like a home Test in November — cool mornings, a full house building through the day, and the game moving at its own ancient pace. After a month of white-ball noise, the Tests feel like coming home.
Players to watch
- Babar Azam (Pakistan, captain) — the Test captaincy is his new challenge; his batting remains the side's foundation.
- Shaheen Afridi (Pakistan) — 126 Test wickets at 28.13, and the new-ball spell that can end a session in twenty minutes. Full stats.
- Sri Lanka's spinners — subcontinent Tests are won by spin, and Sri Lanka always bring quality.
- Pakistan's No. 3 — the revolving door continues; whoever nails the spot down this series owns it for the cycle.
