The likely format
Nothing official yet, but the smart money is on a repeat of 2023: ten teams, single round robin, top four to semi-finals. That format gave us 45 group games and the fairest table the tournament has had — every team plays everyone, no easy groups, no excuses. The ICC liked it, broadcasters liked it, and fans got a proper league table to argue over for six weeks.
What it means for Pakistan: no hiding. In a round robin you need 6–7 wins from 9 to make the semis, which means beating at least two of the big sides along the way. Pakistan's 2023 campaign died on exactly that math.
The hosts
South Africa leads the hosting, with Zimbabwe and Namibia co-hosting — the tournament's first time in Namibia. Expect the big South African grounds to carry the marquee games (semi-finals, final), with Harare hosting Zimbabwe's fixtures. October–November means early-summer conditions: bouncy pitches, pace-friendly mornings, and the highveld altitude factor at venues like Johannesburg.
Qualification: how teams get there
The full qualification pathway hasn't been published yet. Based on recent cycles, expect a mix of automatic qualification (hosts plus top-ranked ODI sides) and a qualifier tournament for the remaining spots — the route that has produced some of the most dramatic cricket of recent years. This page updates the moment the ICC publishes the process.
Pakistan's road to 2027
| When | What | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 2026 | Tri-series vs England/Sri Lanka (home) | First auditions under the new cycle — schedule here |
| Nov 2026 | Tests vs Sri Lanka | Red-ball, but squad momentum matters |
| 2026–27 | Full bilateral calendar | Track via Pakistan's full schedule |
| Mar–May 2027 | PSL 12 (8 teams) | Last big shop window before squad selection |
| Mid 2027 | Expected squad announcement window | 15 names, months of debate beforehand |
Why it matters now
Every bilateral series from here is World Cup preparation — that's exactly how the ICC framed the Pakistan tri-series. Teams are auditioning combinations 12 months out. Our squad prediction tracks who might make Pakistan's 15.
The squads that win World Cups are usually settled 6–9 months out. Pakistan's best tournaments came when the core picked itself; the worst came when the XI was still being debated at the airport. Watch the selections from early 2027 — they'll tell you everything.

Early pick, gun to my head: India vs Australia in the final. India's white-ball depth is absurd right now, and Australia are Australia in World Cups.
