The story so far

Australia have been the cycle's benchmark: 8 wins from 10, Travis Head piling up 914 runs (the cycle's leading scorer) and Mitchell Starc taking 58 wickets (the leading wicket-taker). A shock defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test of their home series was the blip; they bounced back to level it. Their three-match series in South Africa — the top two facing off — is the defining contest of the southern summer.

South Africa, the defending champions from the last cycle, sit second having played the fewest games. Efficient, ruthless, and with the Australia series to come, they control their own destiny.

New Zealand and Bangladesh are the surprise packets. Bangladesh's historic first-Test win in Australia was the result of the cycle so far; New Zealand have quietly won four of six.

India are fifth after a mixed run — a 165-run win in Galle followed by a hard-fought draw in Colombo against Sri Lanka. Their two-Test tour of New Zealand (from November 19) is pivotal.

England played the most cricket (16 Tests) and have the strangest record: 7 wins, 8 losses, and 14 points docked for over-rates. The 3–0 sweep of Pakistan was their highlight; inconsistency elsewhere keeps them mid-table.

Pakistan's campaign: how it went wrong

Two wins, seven defeats, zero draws — and 19 points deducted for slow over-rates (11 in the most recent penalty, 8 more from the Dhaka Test against Bangladesh earlier in the year). The deductions alone tell the story: this hasn't just been a bad team, it's been a badly managed one.

The 3–0 home defeat to England was the low point. Pakistan went from top-ranked Test side in the world in 2016 to bottom of the WTC table a decade later — a fall entirely of their own making, built on over-rate penalties, selection chaos, and home defeats that used to be unthinkable.

How the points system works

Rankings use PCT (points won ÷ points contested) because teams play different numbers of matches. Slow over-rates cost points — and have decided finalists before. Pakistan's 19 docked points are the extreme example: without the penalties, they'd still be near the bottom, but the deductions turned a bad campaign into a humiliating one.

What Pakistan need

Pakistan's November home series vs Sri Lanka (Nov 9–21) is close to must-win territory for final hopes. A 2–0 sweep would lift them several places; anything less and they likely need favours elsewhere plus a strong away tour after. My verdict: the final is a fantasy at this point, but 2-0 over Sri Lanka would at least make the table respectable — and respectability matters when you're blooding youngsters without the press calling for heads.

What the contenders need

TeamPath to the final
AustraliaKeep winning; the SA series is the big hurdle
South AfricaBeat Australia at home and they're almost there
New ZealandWin their home series (WI in December) to stay top-two
IndiaMust win in New Zealand (Nov 19 onwards)
EnglandNeed wins and to stop the over-rate bleeding
Sri LankaBeat Pakistan in November to climb into contention

How PCT works (30-second version)

Played 6 Tests, won 3, drawn 1, lost 2 → points = (3×12) + (1×4) = 40 of 72 contested → PCT = 55.56%. Simple — but every draw and over-rate penalty moves it. Details: WTC points system explained.

The PCT system is what makes the WTC brutal for a team like Pakistan: with nine Tests played and only two wins, every defeat doesn't just cost points — it shrinks the denominator's value. And when you then get docked 19 points on top, you're not climbing back without a miracle run.
