A short history
Gaddafi Stadium has been the headquarters of Pakistan cricket since 1959, when it opened as Lahore Stadium. It was renamed in honour of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi after his support for Pakistan's right to host, and the PCB's offices sit right next door — decisions about Pakistan cricket are literally made in its shadow.
The ground's greatest night came in March 1996, when it hosted the World Cup final: Sri Lanka beat Australia under lights to become champions, Aravinda de Silva's hundred sealing one of the great final performances. For a generation of Lahore fans, that night is the benchmark every big match gets measured against.
The darker chapter is March 2009, when the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists en route to the ground on the third morning of a Test. International cricket left Pakistan for the better part of a decade. Gaddafi stood half-empty for years — which is why its full houses now feel like more than just cricket.
The renovation
Ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, Gaddafi got the most significant facelift in its history: demolished and rebuilt enclosures, steeper stands that pull the crowd closer to the action, new hospitality boxes, upgraded floodlights, and modern dressing rooms. The PCB's official capacity figure is now 34,000 — up substantially from the old configuration.
The difference is real, not cosmetic. The old Gaddafi had vast concrete banks where you watched from a distance; the new one feels like a proper modern arena. Sightlines are better, the noise stays in, and night games have a completely different atmosphere.
Famous nights at Gaddafi

| 1996 World Cup final | Sri Lanka beat Australia to lift the trophy — de Silva's hundred in front of a packed Lahore |
| PSL 2026 final (May 3, 2026) | Peshawar Zalmi beat Hyderabad Kingsmen by 5 wickets; Aaron Hardie's 4/27 & 56* |
| Tri-series final (Oct 31, 2026) | Upcoming — Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka's decider under lights |

Why it matters this month
Lahore gets the business end of everything: the tri-series moves here for its final three games plus the final on October 31, then hosts the deciding Test against Sri Lanka. If Pakistan are in contention, expect a full house and serious noise.
The pitch at Gaddafi is traditionally true — good for batting, with something early for the seamers under lights. Day-night ODIs here tend to favour chasing, and the dew factor in late October is real. Captains winning the toss in the final will think long and hard.
Visiting: what to know
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Getting there | Gulberg area, central Lahore — ride-hailing works on match days, but leave early |
| Best stands | The rebuilt pavilion-end enclosures have the best sightlines |
| Atmosphere | Loudest in the country for night games; the new steep stands amplify it |
| Food | Concourse stalls do the usual — arrive before the innings break to skip queues |
I've been to Gaddafi for three PSL games — the renovated stands are genuinely impressive, steep and loud. Lahore crowds don't do quiet.
One practical tip from experience: for day-night games, the eastern stands get the setting sun in your eyes for the first hour. Worth knowing when you're picking seats.
