Every edition, briefly

— India. The first Asia Cup was a round-robin in Sharjah; India topped the table ahead of Sri Lanka. No final, just the start of a long dominance.

— Sri Lanka beat Pakistan (Colombo). Sri Lanka's first Asia Cup title, won at home against Pakistan in the final. An early sign of what was coming from the islanders.

— India beat Sri Lanka. India defended their crown in Bangladesh, beating Sri Lanka in the final. The late-80s Indian ODI machine kept rolling.

–91 — India beat Sri Lanka. Another India–Sri Lanka final, another Indian win. Three titles in a row for India across the decade.

— India beat Sri Lanka (Sharjah). Same fixture, same result. Sri Lanka kept reaching finals in this era and kept running into India — until 1996 changed everything for them globally.

— Sri Lanka beat India (Colombo). The world champions finally took the Asian crown too, beating India in the final at home.

— Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 39 runs (Dhaka). Pakistan's first Asia Cup title. They posted a competitive total and defended it with room to spare against Sri Lanka. Details: Pakistan's Asia Cup history.

— Sri Lanka beat India. Back on top in the 2000s, beating India in the final in Colombo.

— Sri Lanka beat India. Ajantha Mendis' 6/13 ripped through India in the Karachi final — one of the great mystery-spin performances, and the reason a generation of batters had nightmares about the carrom ball.

— India beat Sri Lanka. India reclaimed the trophy in Dambulla, beating Sri Lanka in the final.

— Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 2 runs (Dhaka). The most dramatic Asia Cup final ever. Bangladesh needed 9 off the last over with wickets in hand and somehow fell 2 runs short; Dhaka went silent. Pakistan's second title, won the hard way.

— Sri Lanka beat Pakistan (Dhaka). Sri Lanka chased down Pakistan's total in the final to take the title — Pakistan's first final defeat in the tournament's later era.

(T20) — India beat Bangladesh (Dhaka). The first T20-format Asia Cup, a warm-up for the World T20. India won comfortably in the final.

— India beat Bangladesh (Dubai). A last-ball thriller — India scraped home off the final delivery. Bangladesh's second straight final defeat, both heartbreakers.

(T20) — Sri Lanka beat Pakistan (Dubai). Sri Lanka, unfancied before the tournament, beat Pakistan in the final after Pakistan had dominated the group stage. One that got away.

— India beat Sri Lanka (Colombo). Mohammed Siraj's 6/21 bowled Sri Lanka out for 50 — the final was effectively over inside the powerplay. Brutal, and over in a hurry.

(T20) — India beat Pakistan by 5 wickets (Dubai). The latest chapter of the rivalry: Pakistan reached the final but India chased down 147 with five wickets in hand on 28 September 2025. India's ninth title — the most by any team.

Pakistan's finals record stings a little: runners-up in 1986, 2014, 2022 and 2025 to go with the two wins. Details: How many Asia Cups has Pakistan won?

The Asia Cup final I remember best is 2012 — two runs, last over, Bangladesh. I've never been that nervous watching cricket before or since.

The 2025 final was a different kind of nervous — Pakistan in an Asia Cup final against India doesn't happen often, and when it does the whole country stops. Didn't go our way, but the occasion was massive.
